Mt. Diablo Beekeepers Association (MDBA) is dedicated to educating communities about honeybees and the historic art of beekeeping. Here are some of the people we visited in 2004.

2/18 Science Fair - Alameda Fair Grounds,
Dublin and Pleasanton School Districts (14 Elementary Schools)
Demo hive and display of beekeeping equipment in booth. Kim handed out honey sticks, Gary showed the laying queen as 2000 plus kids and parents filed past.

Pine Hollow School - Concord
Sixth grade class - "Pollinators and Pesticides"

Mrs. Kahl's class, 32 in class, Debbe spoke to the study subject, and Gary showed the demo hive. We gave Mrs. Kahl an MDBA video.
2/26 Secret Garden Pre-school - Martinez - three classes and parents Kids were ages 3 - 5, so presentation was very simple and short, with a taste of honey on pretzels at the end. It was pouring rain heavily, but the queen bee was laying eggs constantly. Did not explain swarming and how a queen is formed - attention span too short; a younger group than last year.
3/9 Docent training - Heather Farm Gardens About 20 docents. Gary, Debbe, and Hillary discussed demo hive installation which club is providing, and Debbe and Gary will maintain for this season. pretzels & honey
3/9 Girl Scout troop at Strandwood School, Pleasant Hill Honey and pretzels for about 10 scouts plus leaders
3/12 Woodside Elementary, Concord Four first grade Friday classes in two groups (80 total). Gary did first group; Mary did second.
3/18 Montessori School, Lafayette Two pre-school classes, 25 in each. Gary mailed the video - took honey and pretzel sticks.
3/22 Kid Time Pre-School, Walnut Creek Two Monday classes (1/2 hour each).Took video, pretzels and honey for snack time.
3/24 Ygnacio Valley Christian School, Concord Four Middle School classes of 20 each. Took video, honey and pretzel sticks.
3/25 Youth Ag Day - Solano County Fair 3000 students (including busloads from Mexico) with 10 minute presentations. 70 teachers. Gary, Debbe, and Janeen presented and gave away 19 videos to teachers.
3/27 Sunol Park Wildflower Festival in Sunol Regional Park Katie Colbert, a park ranger, requested a demo hive and beekeeping equipment. They had plant societies and composting and gardening people there, from Alameda County. Katie will set up two tables in the shade. Judy and Mary presented.
4/5 Burton Valley Elementary school. Lafayette Miss Van's second grade class. Had video; took honey and pretzel sticks.
4/6 Antioch Riverview Garden Club Debbe and Hillary presented.

Vannoy Elementary, Castro Valley

 

3 classes of second graders (20 each). Had video; took honey and pretzel sticks.
4/12 John Swett Elementary, Martinez 4 first grade classes. Took video, honey, and pretzel sticks.
4/15 Jack London Elementary, Antioch. 2 classes of third graders, Had our video; took honey and pretzel sticks.
4/16 Jack London Elementary, Antioch 2 classes of third graders (one hour class period each). Took honey and pretzel sticks. Debbe did this one (Mary was gathering bees in Willows).
4/16 Stone Valley Middle School, Walnut Creek Mike Stephanos stocked a two-frame demo hive at his home, took honey sticks and did the presentation. Mike gave the school our video last year.
4/30 John Muir Elementary School, Antioch. Denise Gallinetti's third grade class. Mary did this one. Gary mailed video to Denise beforehand. Took honey and pretzel sticks.
5/3 Heights School, Pittsburg Joanne Starke, teacher. We set up in Room 5, and 5 classes of first graders, divided into 3 groups of 35 each, came to that room for 45 minute sessions. Gary mailed our video to Joanne, so they could use it beforehand. Took honey and pretzel sticks.
5/3 Seventh Day Adventist High School Biology class Visited Gary's bees and chickens.
5/6 El Monte Elementary, Concord. Jan Lipnicke, teacher. 4 third grade classes in two groups of 40 each. Jan had video. Took pretzel sticks and honey.
5/6-7 Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm - Spring Days Thad took Debbe's demo hive and showed to 2 busloads of third graders.
5/7 Springhill Elementary, Lafayette. Kim Brast, science teacher. Three first grade classes. Gary took video, honey and pretzel sticks.
5/8 Wild Birds Unlimited on Contra Costa Boulevard in Pleasant Hill Took honey sticks, demo hive and beekeeping gear . Mothers Day celebration, and other plants and environmental groups were there.
5/13 Pixie Preschool, Concord Geri Quilici, teacher. 10 three-year-olds for about 20 minutes and 10 five-year-olds for about a half hour. Video mailed to Geri beforehand. Debbe presented.
5/14 Parkmead Elementary. Walnut Creek Mary Coker, teacher. Three first grade classes, 20 students each, rotated through one classroom. Took honey and pretzel sticks. Mary presented.
5/19 Gehringer Elementary. Oakley Traci Tovani's first grade class. Took honey, pretzel sticks and video. Debbe presented.
5/20 Hearst Elementary School, Pleasanton Kim Lounsbury's class - Open House. Debbe presented.
5/20 Hidden Valley Elementary, Martinez Eight second grade classes in 4 groups. Took honey, pretzel sticks and video. Gary presented.
5/24 Walnut Grove Elementary, Pleasanton Carol Kato, Science Teacher. Six second grade classes in 3 groups of 40 each. Took honey and pretzel sticks. Carol will use video that Kim Lounsbury has. Gary presented..
5/26 Murray Elementary, Dublin Lynn Murphy, teacher. Lynn has video; took honey and pretzel sticks. Gary presented.
6/2 Pleasant Hill Elementary Five second grade classes in 3 groups. Janice Walker, teacher, has our bee video. Gary presented.
6/3 Vintage Parkway Elementary, Oakley. Florence Kobold's second grade class. Gary mailed video beforehand. Debbe took honey and pretzel sticks.
6/3 Palomares Elementary, Castro Valley 4 sessions with 20 students all ages at Science fair. Mailed video beforehand. Took honey and pretzel sticks. Gary presented.
6/9 Walnut Heights Elementary Judy took demo hive to Walnut Heights Elementary - 60 first graders (3 classes combined)
6/24 Rodgers Ranch Round-Up Group (about 30) will walk down and visit bees, chickens, and vineyard.
7/15 Rodgers Ranch visit  
8/3 Timber Point, Byron YMCA enrichment program. Debbe presented. 7 videos mailed beforehand.
8/9 Valhalla School, Pleasant Hill YMCA enrichment program. Gary presented. 50 kids in 2 sessions, ages 6-12.
8/10 Belshaw, Antioch YMCA enrighment program. Debbe presented.
8/12 Rodgers Ranch visit  
8/13 Meadow Homes, Concord YMCA enrichment program. Gary presented. 20 kids, ages 6-12
8/17 Mission, Antioch YMCA enrichment program. Debbe presented.
8/24 Sutter, Antioch YMCA enrichment program. Debbe presented.
8/31 Sunol Regional Park Evening campfire. Judy presented
9/13 Golden View Elementary, San Ramon 5 second grade classes plus 1 special ed class. Ann Schinske has our video. Take pretzel sticks and honey. Gary presented.
9/29 Buena Vista School Gary visited 5 second grade classes.
10/6 Lindsey Wildlife Museum The C3ASME Resourse Faire for teachers.
10/22 Stanley Middle School, Lafayette 7th Grade Science class. Jeff brought the demo hive.
12/28 Lindsey Wildlife Museum Busy With Bees class.
