Background
The Coevolution Institute (CoE) is an eleven-year-old 501(c)3 non-government
organization established by Paul J. Growald in 1997. CoE's mission
is to catalyze stewardship of biodiversity through an emphasis on
pollinator conservation. Pollinators - bees, birds, bats, butterflies,
beetles, and other animals - are keystone species essential to agriculture
and ecosystems.
Since its inception in 1997 as a 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit corporation, the Coevolution Institute has established
itself as an innovator in biodiversity protection. CoE works to
promote the adoption of widespread collaborative stewardship practices
on open and working lands, within institutions, and among public
land managers, farmers, ranchers, gardeners, teachers, and the general
public.
CoE has grown with each year and has made an
important and necessary impact on protecting pollinators around
the world. By 2007, CoE had signed agreements with government organizations
such as the USDA Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
the National Park Service, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Bureau
of Land Management, the Natural Resources Conservation Service,
and the U.S. Geological Survey that have the potential to influence
over 1.5 billion acres of U.S. land for pollinator protection.
CoE programs and activities are flourishing.
CoE's biggest program is the coordination of the North American
Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC), a tri-national collaboration
of over 120 partner organizations working to protect pollinators
and to raise the profile of pollinator issues. NAPPC is the largest
collaborative body dedicated to pollinator conservation in the world.
The Pollinator Partnership, a project
of NAPPC, is a series of initiatives to help people, plants and
pollinators. One project is the website www.pollinator.org, a source
of pollinator information for consumers, gardeners, educators, resource
managers, producers and farmers.
Laurie Davies Adams is the Executive Director
of the Coevolution Institute (CoE). As Executive Director of the
Coevolution Institute, she has overseen the initial organization
and the development of the North American Pollinator Protection
Campaign (NAPPC), the 120+ member collaboration of stakeholders
from Mexico, Cannonade, and the US that work for a variety of fields
including science, the environment, agriculture, and private industry.
NAPPC's successes under Ms. Adams include the National Academy of
Sciences NRC Study on the Status of the Pollinators of North America,
the US Postal Service's "Pollination" stamp series, and the US Senate
and USDA proclamations creating National Pollinator Week and the
signing of numerous Memorandums of Understandings that equal to
over 1.5 billion acres of U.S. land that have the potential to protect
pollinators.
